Port Charlotte was founded in 1828 by Walter Frederick Campbell and named after his mother. It is the best-preserved and most picturesque hamlet on Islay. Port Charlotte, on Florida’s warm Gulf Coast, lies roughly midway between Sarasota and Fort Myers, and is excellently situated to offer a wide range of water sports. More than 165 miles of waterways connect Port Charlotte to Charlotte Harbor, the Gulf of Mexico, and miles of natural beachfront along Charlotte Harbor and the Peace and Myakka rivers.
