THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE GOLF ASSOCIATION

ABOUT THE LMEGA

The London Metal Exchange Golf Association is the oldest Golf Association known. The first records we are able to find go back to 1901. Unfortunately our records before 1901 were lost during the 1939/45 war but we are confident that we probably started about 1885/90.

In the early years, before widespread ownership of cars, golf meetings and matches had to be held at courses near railway stations.

The Association has three meetings every year for its members, the major ones being Captains Day, the Spring Meeting for the Silver Challenge Cup and the Autumn meeting for the Association’s Gold Cup. The Silver Challenge Cup, awarded at the Spring Meeting, was first competed for in 1905.

Many other trophies are played for throughout the year and many of these are displayed in the trophy cabinet in the gallery of the London Metal Exchange overlooking the Ring.

As well as internal competitions we play matches against:-

  • Bank of England
  • London Iron & Steel Exchange
  • London Stock Exchange
  • Sugar Association of London
  • and a Quadrilateral competition between the LMEGA, The Stock Exchange, The Forex and the Bank of England

We hold a Spring Meeting, Captains Day, a Summer Tour, an Autumn Meeting, a Past Captains Competition and a Xmas Fayre as well as an annual knockout competition and we hold an Annual Dinner in the City each year.

The Summer Tour is a particularly enjoyable few days, playing championship courses in some wonderful locations. The past few years have seen tours to the West Country, Scotland, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Our first recorded match was against the Baltic Exchange (then called the Baltic Golf Club) at the Middlesex and Surrey Golf Club (not then yet awarded the prefix ‘Royal’ and shortened to Mid-Surrey) in July 1906 and we marked the centenary of that match at that course in 2006.

We are a thriving Association and always welcome new members.

The Association was established to promote the interests of the game of golf among those associated with the Exchange. All current and former employees of Member companies of the LME and Hon. Members and staff of the LME are eligible to apply to the committee for membership as well as those who, in the Committee’s opinion, use the LME for their metal business or provide services to the LME such as audit, finance, warehousing and shipping.

As you can see in our Fixture List, there are plenty of opportunities during the season for playing.

Please join, we will make you welcome and I am confident that it is a decision you will not regret. You can complete the application form here.
